Shoofly Pie

1-1/2 c. flour
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 tsp. cloves
1/8 tsp. ginger
1/8 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 c. butter
1 c. boiling water
1/2 c. dark molasses
1-1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 egg beaten
1 9 inch unbaked pie shell

In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and nutmeg. Cut in butter with pastry blender or two knives until mixture resembles coarse meal.

Combine water, molasses and baking soda. Blend in egg.

Alternate layer of crumbs and molasses mixture in pastry lined pie pan, beginning and ending with crumbs.

Bake in hot oven 450°F for 10 minutes.

Reduce to 350°F and bake for 15 minutes or until done.
